One of the country’s biggest Catholic pilgrimage centres is dedicated to Mother Mary popularly known as Lourdes of the East or the Lady of Good Health. Constructed in gothic style the church was built more than 600 years ago by Portuguese sailors.
It is believed that the church was founded supported with three miraculous events that includes the appearance of Mother Mary to a slumbering shepherd boy, the curing of a lame buttermilk vendor and the survival of Portuguese sailor assaulted by a violent sea storm. There have been no major evidences supporting these events.
Gaze at the inspiring church built in gothic architectural style which had several additions made by Portuguese sailors. Interior walls are beautifully decorated with paintings that showcase the story of Jesus Christ. The church was raised to the status of Basilica in 1962 by Pope John XXI and acquired the status of a Parish with Fr. Antonio de Rozario as the first Parish priest.
Pay your obeisance to Mother Mary holding baby Jesus in her hand. Devotees convey their prayers to Mother Mary seeking her blessings for good health by writing their wishes in a wish bag and tying them with a yellow string.
