The awe-inspiring religious site dedicated to Lord Vishnu is one of the most revered temples among the 108 Divyadesam (the holy shrines of Lord Vishnu).

The 1500 years old temple has Lord Vishnu in sitting, standing and reclining forms. A 125 feet five tiered Rajagopuram is adorned with marvellous sculptures that display the stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The main sanctum has the idol of Koodal Azhagar in sitting form under the Serpent Lord Adhiseshan and the idols of Sridevi and Bhudevi on both sides. The reclining form of Lord Vishnu known as Sri Ranganathan is located above the altar of Lord Koodal Azhagar.

Designed by Vishwakarma, and surrounded by granite walls the temple has the standing form of Vishnu as Sri Surya Narayan Perumal.

Tourists would appreciate the beautifully sculpted tower above the sanctum sanctorum called the Ashtanga Vimanam. It is interesting to know that the shadow of the Vimanam does not fall on the ground.

The temple also houses the idol of Madhuravalli Thayar, the manifestation of goddess Lakshmi. In a shrine located north of the main shrine we have the idol of goddess Andal Nachiyar.

Viewing the delicately carved ornamental windows and the striking sculptures built in Dravidian style of architecture exudes admiration.

Visitors can even worship the navagrahas which is otherwise present only in Shiva temples.

Created to commemorate the sacrifice of the Father of the Nation, Gandhi Memorial Museum is a must-visit for every traveller especially kids as it gives an opportunity to learn about Gandhiji and his struggle for Independence.

Gandhiji visited the famed Meenakshi Amman Temple in 1946 with Harijans supporting the entry of Harijans into Temples. Gandhiji adopted loincloth as a part of his attire in Madurai in 1921.

Owing to his association with the temple town, the Tamilnadu Government had given the Tammakum Palace to the All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi for setting up the impressive museum. The palace belonging to Rani Mangammal was built in 1670 AD by the Nayak Dynasty.

The special exhibition of Indian Fights for Freedom showcases the history of Freedom Movement. Wander through the Hall of relics that exhibits the ordinary items used by Gandhiji and the blood stained dhoti that he was wearing at the time of assassination preserved in a vacuum glass box.

The section displaying the visual biography of Gandhiji including quotations, paintings, photos, sculpture and letters written by him is highly inspiring. These include the letter from Gandhiji to Adolf Hitler addressing him as Dear Friend and the letter to Narayanan Satsangi of Devakottai.

Collection of 124 rare photographs from Gandhi’s various phases of life introduces visitors with the way of his living. It also has a Khadi and Village Industries Section that represents a myriad of arts and village industry products that Gandhiji had been promoting. There is an open air theatre which can accommodate more than 8000 visitors.
