First up on the local Dehradun sightseeing tour is the Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Dehradun, which is one of the six major monasteries of the Nyingma School in Tibet. The Mindrolling Monastery was established in 1676 by Rigzin Terdak Lingpa. It was then re-established in Dehradun by Khochhen Rinpoche in 1965.

The monastery attracts tourists, photography enthusiasts and is also a major Buddhist pilgrimage spot. Within the monastery complex, you will also find The Ngagyur Nyingma College which is a centre for advanced Buddhist studies for pupils who aim to become monks or scholars of Buddhism.

Within the monastery, there are a number of shrine rooms, prayer halls, Tibetan art pieces, and colourful murals. However, it is the 130 feet statue of Lord Buddha that catches the attention of every visitor. The beautiful monastery is five-storeyed and the statues of Lord Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava are a must see.

The first three floors are decorated with ornate gold paintings and an open platform on the fourth floor offers a striking 360-degree view of the Dehradun Valley. Nestled in the middle of the tranquil foothills of the Himalayas, the Mindrolling Monastery is one of the largest Buddhist centres in the world.

Robber’s Cave is a river cave located approximately 8 kilometres from Dehradun in the Himalayas. Robber’s Cave is a marvellous natural formation where river water flows through the middle of a cave.
