Namgyal Monastery is the home to the Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and it is the most prominent spot on your one day Dharamshala sightseeing package. It is also the largest Tibetan temple outside of Tibet. The second Dalai Lama founded this serene monastery in the 16th century as a center from where Namgyal monks could assist the Dalai Lama in handling public religious affairs.

The monk’s practice meditation based on the profound Buddhist treatises and help in conserving the disputed land of Tibet. After the Red Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959, the Dalai Lama along with hundreds of Tibetans and Namgyal monks, fled to India. The monastery was later re-established the here.

The monastery is home to around two hundred Tibetan monks. In this monastery, you will be able to see the institution’s ancient rituals, art, and traditions. The study of Buddhism is inclusive of modern studies of both Tibetan and English literary works examination of holy texts, Buddhist philosophy, understanding music and musical instruments, and dances. St. John in the Wilderness Church is a neo-gothic church that was built in 1852. Owing to its immense historical significance, it is one of the most important churches in Himachal Pradesh. The church was built to pay tribute to John the Baptist. You will find the church on your way to Mcleodganj. St. John in the Wilderness Church is also the oldest building to have been constructed in Dharamshala.
