The Imambara is best known for its astonishing labyrinth, the Bhul Bhulaiya. This maze is located on the upper floor of the monument. Unarguably, one of the finest example of Mughal architecture, Bara Imambara is truly an engineering marvel and also recognized as the world’s largest unsupported structure. Bara Imambara also houses other structures in its complex like the Asifi Mosque, Shahi Bawali, and Rumi Darwaza.
This building is made of Lakhanui bricks and lime plaster. The architecture of Bara Imambara is a reflection of the Mughal style of architecture. The central hall of the Imambara ranks as the largest arched hall in the world. The bricks in this building have been put together with the interlocking system of bricks, and the ceiling stands devoid of any support of pillars.
The Bara Imambara opens through two large doorways, which are flanked by the grand Asafi Mosque on one side, and a large baori on the other. The Bhul Bhulaiya is a complex, confusing narrow passageway snaking its way inside the upper floor which eventually leads the visitor to the rooftop. The rooftop offers an excellent panoramic view of Lucknow.
2. Chhota Imambara

The Chhota Imambara is also known as the Imambara of Hussainabad. This impressive monument lies westward of Bara Imambara and will be the next stop in the one day Lucknow tour. The Chhota Imambara used to be a worship hall for Shia Muslims and was built by Muhammad Ali Shah, in the year 1838. The Imambara also serves as Ali Shah and the queen mother’s mausoleum, and they are buried side by side.
Decorated with bright, glowing chandeliers during the festival of Muharram, it is one of the most valuable historical structures that Lucknow has. This monument displays various architectural styles and is a beautiful amalgam of Charbagh, Indo-Islamic and Persian structural and architectural enterprises.
The exterior of the monument is adorned with Quranic verses which have been written in calligraphy on the walls of the building. Baroque carvings and exquisite calligraphy make the Chota Imambara one of the most exciting places to visit in Lucknow.
The five entryways of the Chhota Imambara are dedicated to ‘Panjetan’ or the holy five. The Imambara houses two halls and a Shehnasheen. The Shehnasheen has a raised platform where the Zarih of Imam Husain is kept. The hall of Azakhana is lavishly decorated with chandeliers and crystal glass lamp-stands. There are also beautiful water fountains inside the complex of the Chhota Imambara.
3. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden

The Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Prani Udyan attracts thousands of visitors every year, especially children. This enormous zoo covers an area of 71.6 acres. This zoo was established in 1921 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales to Lucknow. The zoo was initially known as the Prince of Wales Zoo but was renamed later.
This zoological garden houses a variety of exotic animals such as Royal Bengal tiger, white tiger, great pied hornbill, and golden pheasant among others.

The Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow was constructed in the year 1784 under the patronage of Nawab Asaf-ud-daula. Also known as the Turkish Gateway, The Rumi Darwaza is actually thought of as a replica of a gateway that is very similar, in ancient Constantinople.
The Rumi Darwaza is 60 feet tall. The highest storey of Rumi Darwaza has an octagonal “chhatri” carved beautifully and can be visited after climbing a shirt flight of stairs. The word “Rumi” is derived from the modern day Rome. Rumi Darwaza is one of the first gateways that have been built in Lucknow.
There used to be a huge lantern on top of the structure that would light up the structure at night making it look breathtakingly beautiful. Little jets of water and water along with delicately carved flowers adorn the gateway and beautify it even further.

5. Hussainabad Clock Tower

Hussainabad Ghanta Ghar is the tallest clock tower in India. This 67 metres high free-standing clock tower is perched between Bara Imambara and Chhota Imambara. This imposing clock tower occupies the central position in a green field.
This clock tower was designed by Roskell Payne. The architectural style is an influence of Victorian-Gothic architectural designs. This square tower is constructed of red bricks and has four clock faces. Each clock face has a 12 petalled flower shaped dials, and each petal signifies an hour. At the summit of the tower, there is a bird-shaped figure mounted over a small shiny dome.
This edifice is a fine example of British architectural skills. The majestic Ghanta Ghar was constructed between 1882 to 1887 by the Hussainabad Endowment in honour of Sir George Couper. 6. British Residency

The Residency houses the graves of around 2000 British soldiers who died in the Revolt of 857. Today, the British Residency of Lucknow has been converted into a government office. The Residency also has a museum which is maintained by the government.

Dilkusha Kothi Palace which is now partly in ruins was built in the year 1800 by Major Gore Ouseley. This monument used to be a hunting lodge and also a summer retreat of the kings of Awadh. The architectural pattern of this three-storeyed monument has been designed in the European Baroque style. The massive pillars on the front and the steps leading up to those pillars are an excellent example of this school of architecture.
