Mahabaleshwar is a quaint hill town in Maharashtra well known for its beautiful rivers, magnificent waterfalls, and majestic hills. Located in Satara district of Maharashtra, it is a popular weekend getaway destination for the people of Pune and Mumbai, making it ideal for our one day Mahabaleshwar local sightseeing tour. Apart from the natural beauty all around, the town is also visited for its temples, boarding schools, and natural scenic views.

The pleasant weather of Mahabaleshwar is a great excuse to visit the town when you are tired of the heat of the city. It is cool all year round, and the monsoons are very romantic too. Mahabaleshwar is also called the queen hill station of Maharashtra! The town constitutes three villages, namely Malcolm Peth, Old Mahabaleshwar, and Shindola village. The places that you must visit in Mahabaleshwar are Arthur’s Seat, Lingmala Waterfall, and Pratapgad Fort.

The town of Mahabaleshwar as we know it today came into existence in 1829. It was the erstwhile summer capital of Bombay presidency before Independence. Krishna River emerges from Mahabaleshwar and flows through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

The source of the river is a small fountain from the mouth of a statue of a cow in Panch Ganga Temple, which is also visited by tourists. The viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramic views of the lofty Sahyadri Mountains and surrounding valleys. The town is also famous for the cultivation of strawberries and mulberries, and some plantations even offer a tour of the same!

The rock formations at the site resemble the trunk of an elephant, and it is from here that the unique name of this site is derived. It may also be that Elephant’s Point derived its name from the former Governor of Bombay, Sir Mount Elphinstone. The site is believed to have been discovered by Dr. Murray in the year 1930. He used to live in a mansion nearby. Today the mansion is in ruins and has been converted into a picnic shed by local authorities.
