Adventure lovers, who enjoy a quiet atmosphere often take a one-day Cherrapunji sightseeing package since it’s a relatively lesser known place for trekking. The most popular trekking route is in Nongriat village that leads the trekkers to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. The path can be tricky, so it is advisable to hire a guide.

The famous Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge of Cherrapunji is located in one of the region’s thick tropical forests and will be the first, as well as most exciting part of the one-day Cherrapunji local sightseeing tour. Drenched in the rain for a good part of the year, these marvelous human-made bridges of Meghalaya are an eclectic mix of human talent and natural wonder.

The bridge was built from ancient rubber trees that are endemic only to the northeast region of India. The people of the Khasi tribe took it upon themselves to build the bridge which is now one of the most visited sites in the entire state of Meghalaya. The bridges were made as an alternative to wooden bridges that rot and erode due to continuous rainfall.

The entangled roots of the vertically parallel bridges are truly stunning to see. A new root bridge takes up to fifteen years to become strong enough to bear the weight of people who would be walking on it. Some bridges are believed to be almost five centuries old! The Umshiang Double-Decker Bridge is 3 KM long and stands at the height of 2,400 feet.
