What to see! A Quick Guide to Kanyakumari Sightseeing Tour by Taxi

1. Kanyakumari Bhagavathi Amman Temple

The temple town of Kanyakumari is an important Hindu pilgrim centre and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every day because of the famous Kanyakumari Bhagavathi Amman Temple. This temple is dedicated to Devi Kanya Kumari, who is the adolescent girl avatar of Goddess Parvati.

The story of how the temple came into existence goes something like this. Lord Shiva was supposed to marry Devi Kanya, who was his ardent worshipper. However, due to some misinformation, the marriage could not take place and Devi Kanya felt humiliated.

She lost control and destroyed whatever she saw. Later when she gained her composure, she felt remorseful and decided to never marry again.

As such, Devi Kanya Kumari came to be known as the symbol of virginity and purity. Kanya Puja, a holy ritual that’s conducted on the 8th & 9th day of Navratri is also to worship Devi Kanya Kumari.

The style of architecture is a hybrid of various styles considering the temple was constructed in parts by various dynasties including the Pandya dynasty, the Chola dynasty, the Vijayanagara and the Nayaka rulers.

  • Must See / Things To Do: One must see the image of the deity holding the prayer beads. The statue was built only two decades ago and has gained umteen popularity in no time. It weighs approximately 14 million pounds and is 133 feet tall and is made using stone and concrete.

The 133 feet is representative of the 133 chapters in the Tamil classic language text, Tirukkuṛaḷ. The statue is symbolic of Virtue, Wealth and Love, just like the Tirukkuṛaḷ which is divided into three books by the same names. While Virtue is denoted by the platform, Wealth and Love is denoted by the statue itself.

It is located at the Triveni Sangam, which is the confluence point of the three rivers, and it is here that they meet the Indian Ocean.

Despite its modest construction, the highlight of the memorial is the scientific approach that was used to build it. The height of the dome which is 79 feet was kept in mind considering that was the age of Mahatma Gandhi at the time of his demise.

A small outlet is built on the wall and with such precision that on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, i.e., on 2nd October every year, the sun rays fall directly at the spot where his ashes were kept.

  •  Must See / Things To Do: One must definitely see the various rare photographs of Gandhi and other freedom fighters that are displayed here with a little description that accompanies it.
