The Sanskrit word Mahishasura is a combination of two words, Mahisha meaning buffalo and Asura meaning demon, as such the name refers to the Buffalo demon who as per the Hindu mythology was destroyed by Goddess Chamundeshwari.

Built under the supervision of the eminent Chief Engineer, Mr. M.Visvesvaraya, the dam has been serving as a source of water for Mandya, Mysore and Bangalore.
Take a short detour to experience the tranquil beauty of the Brindavan Garden spread over 60 acres and divided into four sections. The three terraced garden beautifully represents the ficus trees and the flowering plants like celosia, marigold and bougainvillea.
The immaculately maintained Brindavan garden is decked with varied fountains including cross channel fountains, umbrella fountain, inverted basket fountain and pyramid fountain.
