Also known as the Prasanna Chennakeshava, the Somnathpur Chennakeshava temple has been built by Somnatha, the general of King Narasimha III, in 1268. The holy temple located in the village of Talakad at a distance of 35km from Mysore is well maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.

The Richly sculptured temple exemplifying astonishing Hoysala architecture has been nominated for World Heritage Site. The ancient abode of Lord Vishnu’s different incarnations, Kesava, Janardhana and Venugopal is the last temple built under the Hoysala reign.

The Idol of Kesava was set on western sanctum, the idol of Janardhana on the northern sanctum while Venugopal on the southern sanctum with all the three sanctums sharing a common community hall called sabha mandapa.

The Temple is built on a star shaped elevated platform called upapeetha or jagathi and each of the three sanctums has a 16 point star shaped tower called Shikara. Witness the ancient mythological stories and legends from Ramayana, Purana and Mahabharata beautifully engraved on the outer walls.

Once in every 3-12 years a fair called Panchalinga Darshan is held in Talakad where the poojas are simultaneously performed in all these five imposing temples. The place that commemorates spiritual bliss had the patronage of the Gangas, Chola, Hoysala, and Vijayanagar kings.

The Vaidyanatheshwara Temple built by the Cholas signifies their proficiency in architecture. Entering the strikingly carved temple gates instantly noticeable are the sculptured and decorated dwarapalakas.

People State that a man named Somadatta and his disciples on their way to the holy place were killed by a herd of elephants, post which they were reborn as elephants and worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a tree.

Two hunters called Tala and Kadu tried to cut down the tree were stopped by a divine voice stating that the tree was a form of the god. The wounds were covered by leaves and it got healed as such the place got the name of Talakad. The tree as a manifestation of lord Shiva got healed on his own as such the name Vaidyanatheshwara.

It is believed that it was Lord Brahma who installed and worshipped the huge Shivalinga in Maruleshwara temple. Arkeshwara Temple houses a rock at the entrance with a Vaastu yantram and it is said that tying a deceased cow to this rock will cure them. The Pataleshwara temple is believed to change colors during the day (red in the morning, black in afternoon, and white in the evening)
