The Temple entrance that welcomes visitors with a wonderful tower known as gopuram had been well visited by Raja Wodeyar and Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. Both the kings have been known to have bestowed several endowments to the illustrious temple.

The Diamond crown owned by the temple called the Vairamudi, the gold crown called Krishnaraja mudi gifted by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III and the gold crown called Raja mudi offered by Raja Wodeyar are being maintained by the government and brought to the temple during the famous annual Vairamudi festival. Prominent as the Badrinath of south the temple is believed to have been visited by Lord Rama.

Legends say that the Vaishnava saint Ramanucharya who spent around 12 years in the holy place brought back the lost Utsavamurthi, a metallic idol of the deity used for processions and certain religious rituals.

The Amazing statue built by Chavundaraya took 12 years of dedicated craftsmanship for its completion. The 57 feet tall statue of Lord Bahubali is also popular for the head anointing ceremony called Mahamastakabhisheka held once in 12 years. The erotic sculpture of Gomateshwara is bathed in milk, curds, ghee, saffron and sugar cane juice.

Local legends state that Chandragupta Maurya had died in this place after he became a Jain monk.

The Temple completed in 103 years houses 118 inscriptions and stands on an elevated platform called jagati.It has the largest central hall called the navranga among all the Hoysala temples with intricately carved 48 pillars.

The Sanctum has the alluring 6 feet high idol of Lord Vijayanarayana or Kesava standing on a 3 feet high base. Narasimha pillar with erotic miniature figures and Mohini Pillar with carvings of Brahma, Shiva and the ten avatars of Vishnu, are the most distinguished pillars among the others.
