Mother Teresa established Mother House or Missionaries of Charity as a religious congregation in the year 1950. Their selfless service and kindness have inspired many a people for generations and today several branches are running all over the world, carrying forward Mother Teresa’s legacy. St. John’s Church is the third oldest church of Kolkata. It was built in 1787 by the architecture James Agg. The church is a rich storehouse of ancient memories and some important landmarks related to the history and foundation of Kolkata, making it an important sight in our Kolkata city tour. Warren Hastings and Reverend William Johnson were the ones who insisted that this church was made.
The church has been built entirely on the site of the old burial ground. The burial ground has remained closed since 1767 after Maharaja Nabakrishna Deb sold the property to Warren Hastings. St. John’s is also a great place to attend Sunday service and Christmas mass.
6. Marble Palace

Marble Palace was built in 1835 as a private residence for Raja Rajendra Mullick, a wealthy Bengali merchant and art enthusiast. This magnificent palace was built with the idea of preserving the exquisite works of art.
The palace stands as a testament to Mullick’s grand wealth which is displayed in the palace’s shining marble floors, an exquisite collection of Western sculptures and Victorian furniture. The mansion has a grand porch which is decorated with stucco work and six Tuscan columns.
The ground floor and first floor each have 14 Corinthian columns. Apart from sculptures and furniture, Marble Palace also exhibits beautiful paintings by renowned Indian and European artists and other objects of art.
Artefacts such as clocks, chandeliers, floor to ceiling mirrors, urns and busts of kings and queen also grace the mansion complex. Mullick also preserved two important paintings of Rubens – The Marriage of St. Catherine and The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian
7. Victoria Memorial, Kolkata
