1. Alwar Fort

First up on the one day local sightseeing tour in Alwar is the most important spot in the city. Bala Quila Fort, also known as Alwar Fort, is situated on the top of the Aravalli Range in Alwar. The distance between the city centre and the fort is only 12 KM.

The foothill of the cliff must be reached by autos, private rental cabs or tourist buses. But from the foothill, there is a steep 7 KM climb up to the fort that can be covered only on foot.

The magnificent fort was built by Hasan Khan Mewati in the15th century. The fort has celebrated the rule of the Marathas, Yadavas, and Kachwaha Rajputs. Laxman Pole in the fort complex is the only metalled road which connects the Fort to the city of Alwar.

In the year 1755, Kachhwaha Rajput Pratap Singh conquered the fort and laid the foundation of Alwar city. There are many viewpoints inside the fort from where you can enjoy majestic panoramic views of the city. The Forth covers a massive area of 5 KM from North to South and 1.6 KM from East to West.

There are six notable gates in the fort – Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishen Pol and Andheri Gate. These gates narrate the tales of valour and gallantry of the Rajputs. The walls of the fort are elaborately crafted with ancient scriptures and beautiful sculptures.

2. Alwar City Palace

The Alwar City Palace is also known as Vinay Vilas Mahal. It is an architectural marvel which displays a marvellous mix of Mughal and Rajasthani architectural styles, making it ideal for the history and architecture buffs on our local Alwar sightseeing tour. Build in the 18th century, this superb palace is located right at the foothills of Aravalli, below Bala Quilla.

The City Palace may be entered through various gateways such as Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Kishan Pol and Andheri Gate. The walls and ceilings of this beautiful palace are decorated with a marvellous cornucopia of murals and mirror work. There are fifteen tall towers and fifty-one smaller towers in the palace that overlook the Aravalli mountains.

What once used to be the residential complex for the royalty has today been converted into a state-funded museum. The museum was built by Maharaja Tej Singh Prabhakar Bahadur in 1940.

The biggest attraction of the museum is the impressive collection of royal memorabilia that includes armour, furniture and manuscripts. There is an elevated door shaped pavilion built within the Vinay Vilas Mahal that stands for the pride and honour of the Rajputs.

3. Siliserh Lake Palace

The grand Siliserh Lake Palace is spread over an area of 7 square kilometres in Alwar district. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most important nature reserves in the Aravalli Hills. The protected forest area occupies an area of over about 800 square kilometres. It was declared as a national park in 1982. The wildlife sanctuary covers an impressive area of grasslands, dry deciduous forests, cliffs and rocky terrain.

Within The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary also lies the Sariska Tiger Reserve, which is an interesting spot for animal lovers on the Alwar city sightseeing tour. This area initially functioned as the hunting reserve for the Maharaja of Alwar.

This is the first tiger reserve to relocate the Tigers from Ranthambore successfully and see a significant rise in its tiger population. As it lies in the lap of Aravalli Hills, the forests are also blessed with an abundant reserve of copper. Sariska attracts nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and photography buffs.

Within the forest, you will also find the ruins of medieval temples of Garh-Rajor dynasty. Most of these temples date back to the 10th and 11th centuries. There is also a 17th-century castle at Kankwari from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area.

Another place that you must visit within Sariska is Pandopil. It is believed that the Pandava brothers have spent a few days here while they were in exile. The Nilkanth temple located nearby is another must- see attraction here. The splendid temple was built by the Bargujars.

5. Kesroli Hill Fort

6. Sariska Palace

Sariska Palace was built in 1892 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Alwar. The lavish palace is spread over an area of 120 acres of lush green fields that makes every visitor fall in love with it. The palace used to be the guest house for the Maharaja himself and his companions who would come to Sariska on hunting trips.

As you must have understood, the palace is not only located in a close proximity to the Sariska National Park but is in fact, situated right adjacent to it. The beauty of the palace is magnified by the dense forest cover.

Sariska Palace is now open to tourists as a 5-star heritage hotel. The dazzling palace overlooks the national park and provides a panoramic view of the nearby forest. If you cannot stay overnight at the Sariska Palace, then you may instead opt to stop for lunch or coffee.

7. Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri

Located in close proximity to the main palace of Alwar, Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri was built by Vinay Singh. The edifice was built in the memory of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh and Rani Moosi.

Rani Moosi had committed ‘sati’ and this memorial is built in the honour of her valour and sacrifice, making it an interesting spot for students of history, on the Alwar city tour. This beautiful monument contains the tomb of the king and the queen.

The entire chhatri is supported by pillars made of sandstone. This two-storeyed structure is set against the backdrop of Aravalli Hills. The Chhatri looks especially stunning during sunset. The top floor is engraved and constructed entirely of marble whereas the interiors are contained with beautiful paintings from Hindu mythology. If you look up you will see stunning frescoes on the ceiling.
