The Junagarh Fort is the first spot on our one day Bikaner sightseeing tour, and it is a magnificent fort located in the town of Bikaner. It is around this fort that the modern city of Bikaner as we know today grew and developed. Initially called Chintamani, this grand fort was renamed Junagarh or Old Fort in the 1900s.
Rao Bika laid the foundations of the Junagarh Fort in 1478. The fort that we see today was inaugurated on 17th February 1589. The Junagarh Fort is a grand structure replete with palaces, gardens, balconies, and courtyards. These structures exhibit the unique combination of the fort’s architectural style that has been influenced by the preferences of different rulers and colorful architectural designs.
You will also find confluences of Gujarati and Mughal architectural styles in the style of the fort. The semi-western influences in the architecture of the fort were brought in during the rule of Maharaja Ganga Singh. Junagarh fort has been built and rebuilt by sixteen generation of rulers starting from the late 16th century.
Within the fort, you will also stumbleupon mosques, Hindu and Jain temples, Buddhist monuments, Gothic architecture and beautiful havelis. This impressive fort attracts thousands of tourists every day during peak season.
2. Karni Mata Temple

More than its religious significance, tourists are drawn to the temple owing to the fabulous legends surrounding the goddess and seeing millions of rats running around freely in the temple. Karni Mata is believed to have laid the foundation stones of two of the most famous forts and temples in Rajputana.
The most interesting aspect of the temple is the millions of black rats that live here, which are considered sacred and worshipped. So much so that the food that is eaten by these rats is thought to be holy and is also served to the devotees as ‘prasad’.
These holy rats are known as kabbas.
On any given day you would see people from all over the world who have traveled a great distance to visit the temple, filming of documentaries and scholars trying to research on the rats and the validity of their reverence. Karni Mata Temple is thus also known as the ‘Temple of Rats’. It is a 600 years old temple located in the small town of Deshnok, which is only 30 KM from Bikaner town center. Marvelous tales and legends surround the temple and the rats that live here, but no one knows for sure as to how this unique temple came to be.
The Karni Mata Temple is also an excellently built piece of architecture. The Mughal style of architecture has influenced the style of the construction. The temple is adorned with a gorgeous marble facade and carvings done on pieces of marble. While the temple sounds unusual, one must not miss out on this unique experience!
3. Lalgarh Palace

Lalgarh Palace is a breathtaking palace located in the quaint town of Bikaner. The palace was built over twenty-four years from 1902 and 1926 for the Maharaja of Bikaner, Maharaja Ganga Singh. The mansion no longer serves as the royal residence but has now been converted into a heritage hotel by the National Heritage Trust and is a charming location on the Bikaner private local sightseeing package.
The colors of this enormous palaces change every hour of the day. If you can manage, do try to take a peek inside the grand rooms of the palace. Gajner Palace is located in the small town of Bikaner along the banks of Gajner Lake. The palace was built as a hunting lodge for Maharaja Ganga Singh and his family.
