This will be the first place that we visit in our one day Puri local sightseeing city tour. Located in the heart of Puri, the Jagannath Temple was built by King Indradyumna in the 11th century and is the most important spot in the state.
The temple is dedicated to one of Lord Vishnu’s incarnations, Lord Jagannath. Other than the main shrine, the smaller shrines in the temple complex are a must visit too.
The temple has been constructed in the Oriya style of architecture. There are four gates at the entrance of the temple, all of which have been beautifully decorated with intricate designs.

Puri Beach is the most famous beach in all of Orissa and will undoubtedly be that touch of nature you need in your one day Puri city tour. Narendra Tank is only a kilometer away from Jagannath Temple. Narendra Tank, also known as Narendra Pokhari is a holy tank located in Puri. It is also one of the most massive tanks in Orissa and thus, is a must visit when you embark upon your Puri local tour.
Narendra Dev built the tank in the 15th century AD. The tank is spread over a massive area and has an island in the middle. The island houses a small temple known as Chandana Mandapa. This tank is surrounded by many temples and is considered holy. The water is 10 feet deep and has 16 ghats. You will see pilgrims bathing at these ghats.
Locals also address this spot as Chandana Pushkarini, after the Chandan Yatra of Lord Jagannath. During this festival, all the deities are removed from the temples and floated in the water of this tank. The celebrations take place during the Hindu month of Baisakhi.
4. Raghurajpur Artist Village

If your time permits, you can also visit Raghurajpur, which is a small heritage crafts village located at a distance of 10 KM from Puri. There are about a hundred families in this village, and almost all of them are gifted artists.
The art form practiced in Raghurajpur is known as Pattachitra. The style is applied in making traditional masks, stone idols, papier mache, sculptures and wooden toys.
The village also has quite a few artists who have won national and international awards for their exceptional work so visiting this place is something to brag about, once you get back from your One day Puri sightseeing tour!
Apart from the beautiful artwork, tourists also visit the village to enjoy the scenic surroundings of coconut, palm and jackfruit groves. You can also visit the home and institution of the renowned Odissi dancer Kelucharan Mohapatra, who was born in this same village.

5. Markandeshwar Temple

Also known as Markandeya Shiva Temple, Markandeshwar Temple is a famous Shiv temple in Puri. The temple is located to the north of the Jagannath Temple. The most important festivals that are organized in this temple are Chandana Yatra, Sital Sasthi, Kaliyadalan Balabhadra Janma and Ashram Bike. The temple is one of the five sacred shrines of Puri and one of the fifty-two sacred Shiva temples in India.
The temple was constructed by sage Markandeya. According to legends, the sage built this temple when Shiva appeared before him after years of meditation. The temple was probably built in the 12th century. The idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha are placed within the main shrine. Figurine of Lord Shiva in different avatars has been erected in the corners of the temple.
