First up on the Haridwar sightseeing spots we have Har ki Pauri, which is one of the most sacred ghats in Haridwar and in India. Har Ki Pauri means ‘Steps to Lord Shiva’ and is thus revered as one of the seven holiest places in India.

It is believed that it was at Har ki Pauri where the celestial bird Garuda accidentally spilled a few drops of an elixir and made this site holy. The river is painted in a golden color every evening when countless diyas are set afloat on the river by the devotees.

Har Ki Pauri is also the site where River Ganga that has been cascading through the Himalayas touches the plains for the first time. The water appears calm but beware of its strong currents and be especially mindful of your children and elderly family members!
Har ki Pauri is also believed to have been visited by Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. In fact, do remember to see the stone wall that is said to hold the imprints of Lord Vishnu’s feet!

Ganga Aarti is a religious prayer that takes place at Har ki Pauri in Haridwar, without fail, every day of the year. This special evening prayer attracts tourists and devotees from all over the world. The aarti seems to be a festival of light and sound where the priests perform the prayer rituals with bowls of fire, ringing the temple bells and blowing conch shells. This aarti along with Ganga Maiyya pays tribute to Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara.

The Ganga Aarti attracts up to 30,000 devotees every evening. The ritual begins by bringing the idol of Ganga from a temple located on the same ghat. The goddess is brought to the prayer platform in a decorated ‘palkhi.’ The priests dance and chant holy hymns and shortly after, the prayer starts.

This is then followed by the singing of ‘Ganga Lahari’ and devotees singing praises of Goddess Ganga. And finally, the main aarti begins. The aarti is just a five-minute song accompanied by the sound of bells and conch shells. This can turn out to be an overwhelming experience, and the devotees are left wanting more.


3. Mansa Devi Temple

Laxman Jhula is a famous hanging bridge across the river Ganga that connects Tapovan and Jonk in Rishikesh. The bridge has been constructed of iron and is 450-feet long. Laxman Jhula finds references in myths, and it is believed that Lord Lakshman had crossed the river using the very same bridge and the modern bridge is just a reconstruction of the same.

The bridge was opened to the public in 1929 and is visited by thousands of tourists every year to see the temples, markets, and restaurants near the bridge.
